After lamenting the sorry state of my phonecam, I realized I have something better in the Canon A520, which is an old point-and-shoot I generally only use for short (i.e., 30 second) video. Despite it’s low-techsavviness, the el cheapo Canon A520 (you can probably pick one up off Craigslist or eBay for $10) still trumps any phonecam, even the iPhone. Did you know that even on these old point-and-shoots you can shoot in aperture priority, shutter priority, manual settings for both, control white balance, exposure compensation, exposure metering (evaluative, centre-weighted, and spot), and even ISO? Yes, they may appear lowly, but you actually have much more control over your basic digicam than you probably realize.

I’ve uploaded 13 photos taken with the Canon A520 shot mostly today (a few yesterday) on the walk home. I fooled around with 1-step editing in Lightroom, but otherwise what you see here is performance out of a basic point-and-shoot. Not bad!
