In The Spotlight

I like to be creative in my wedding photography, but sometimes the venue works against me. In this particular venue, the guests were partitioned by walls and doors, it was tough to move around, and the most photogenic backgrounds were all outside — but it was freezing and nobody wanted to go outside! If you were exploring with the rest of the Nuit Blanche crowds, you know exactly what I’m talking about. It was frigid!

But earlier, I did a second location scout and found some pot lighting in an outdoor corridor leading to a courtyard in front of the restaurant, which gave me this idea. The only thing I had to do was convince people it was going to work, which is easier said than done. Even though it was a corridor, it was still outdoors. I knew I had to do two things: 1) wait until they had food and drinks to warm up, and 2) get one intrepid couple out there first and show the photo to the rest to get them out there. In the end I got most of the couples who were still on the dance floor to do it.
